Objectives  <\/b>The introduction of the rubber dam (RD) dates back more than 150 years ago and today it is still considered a fundamental ele\u00adment of the \u201cstandard of care\u201d in modern dentistry.<\/p>\n

Despite obvious advantages of using rubber dam in daily dental treatments, the per\u00adcentage of dentists who steadily use it during restorative and end\u00adodontic procedures is still low.<\/p>\n

The reasons generally provided for not using RD include: fear for patient disapproval, treatment time extended, treatment cost in\u00adcreased, questionable clinical need. On these bases, the main purpose of the present study was to investigate patient opinion to\u00adwards RD, to evaluate the time re\u00adquired for the dam placement (PT) and to estimate its influence on the overall treatment time.<\/p>\n

Other purposes were to investi\u00adgate the percentage of patients who already knew and experi\u00adenced RD in previous treatments, and to compare the mean time re\u00adquired by differently experienced operators to perform dental treat\u00adments using RD.<\/p>\n

Materials and methods  <\/b>In full accordance with the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki, 200 questionnaires were distributed among patients treated either by specialized private practi\u00adtioners or by new graduate young dentists, working in the Unit of Re\u00adstorative Dentistry and Endodontics of the \u201cG. D\u2019Annunzio\u201d University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy).<\/p>\n

The questionnaires gathered in\u00adformation about the kind of treat\u00adments performed (endodontic or restorative) and about the quality of experience that the patient per\u00adceived during the treatment in\u00adcluding the use of the dental dam. Using SPSS, data were sorted and analyzed descriptively. Treatment time mean values were compared by means of Student t test.<\/p>\n

Results  <\/b>The 97% of patients had a positive opinion on RD. The same percent\u00adage was positively motivated for re\u00adceiving further treatments requiring rubber dam.<\/p>\n

This positive personal motivation seemed somehow linked to the comfort level reported by patients and to the patient understanding of the rubber dam utility.<\/p>\n

In the most of the cases, the time spent for RD placement was be\u00adtween 0 and 2 min: it was gener\u00adally shorter for specialized den\u00adtists and for endodontic treat\u00adments. The 79% of patients were on their first experience with rub\u00adber dam.<\/p>\n

Conclusions <\/b> Rubber dam is still just partially used among Italian general den\u00ad     tists, as suggested by the low per\u00adcentage of patients who had al\u00adready experienced RD before this survey. Nevertheless, patients\u2019 personal attitude to rubber dam seems positive and it seems that it could be further improved if pa\u00adtients understand the rationale behind RD use. <\/p>\n

Clinical significance  <\/b>The ratio between RD placing time and the overall treatment time ap\u00adpears low; this fact should encourage general dentists to improve their skills in the context of dental dam isolation, as the time taken to set it up be\u00adcomes a gain in quality of treatment, safety and comfort for the patient. <\/p>\n
